Torlasco Moscato D'Asti

...Rachele Torlasco lighted up the upper-class lounges of Piedmont at the beginning of the 19th century.

Thanks to an extraordinary joy of life and charming spirit, she made friendly relationships with the exponents of the aristocracy of the time. The appeal that Donna Rachele emanated, was also due to a particular scent that she would leave after her, a sort of unforgettable, distinct and iridescent smell. She also had an innate passion for different smells therefore she started to study and list different fragrances of many plants, flowers, herbs and fruits.

As time went by she discovered the secrets, the right balance and the perfect harmony among the scents and she started to create new and fantastic perfumes. The first person, who became bewitched by Donna Rachele was a French land-owner. He suggested to Donna Rachele to make a wish in exchange to the fragrances. She said that she always wanted to own a land near Canelli in the Asti province, where was growing a scented white grape called Moscato.

The intriguing French man fulfilled the wish. Donna Rachele stared right away to dedicate all her work to the beautiful grapes. She discovered that the name Moscato, was first used in the Middle Ages with the meaning of “fragranced” as a result of the Latin word “muscus”.

The idea of giving birth to a fragranced wine fulfilled Donna Rachele. With the first vintage she achieved a Moscato with an unique aroma, delicate but at the same time intensive which had the flavour of lime and wisteria, with the scent of sage, peach, apricot, lemon and orange.

The wine was excellent and let everybody pleasantly surprised, and from that time on Donna Rachele became “Madame Rachele”, the woman of Moscato for antonomasia.

The label Torlasco Moscato d’Asti celebrates entirely the figure of the eccentric grape-woman, and on the label itself there is the portrait that a passing painter made of “Madame Rachele”.
